Tony leads Novara’s global litigation and regulatory practice across the firm’s New York and Tokyo offices. A disputes and international arbitration lawyer by background, he works with Novara’s deal teams to identify dispute and regulatory risk before and during due diligence and deal execution, advising on dispute avoidance and contract structuring for cross-border transactions, particularly between Asia and the United States. His work includes assessing regulatory exposure, litigation history, enforcement risk and investment treaty protection, and building the right protections into transaction documents. When disputes do arise, he runs them, from negotiation and mediation through to arbitration and litigation.
Educated at Cornell University and Fordham University School of Law, Tony has two decades of experience in international arbitration, mediation, cross-border litigation and regulatory matters, the greater part of it in Japan. He represents Japanese, Korean and international clients in high-value, complex disputes, including U.S.-related and New York-seated proceedings, and works closely with local counsel across Asia. His practice also covers internal investigations, competition, anti-corruption and international trade, as well as cross-border insolvency, and his sector experience spans financial services, trading companies, manufacturing, real estate and construction, energy and maritime shipping. He sits as an arbitrator and mediator, including appointments through the JCAA, ICC and HKIAC, and has served as a U.S. government expert advising Asian ministries, courts and institutions on dispute resolution capacity building and legal reform.
Before joining Novara, Tony was a partner at DLA Piper, where he led the international arbitration practice in Tokyo, and previously a partner at Quinn Emanuel Urquhart & Sullivan. He began his career at Hughes Hubbard & Reed in New York and later served as the firm’s Tokyo-based counsel, including an extended secondment to Nishimura & Asahi. Earlier, he clerked at the U.S. Court of International Trade.
Tony is admitted in New York and is a registered foreign lawyer in Japan (Dai-ichi Tokyo Bar Association). He serves as the Japan Commercial Arbitration Association’s Professional & Institutional Relations Officer, is a board member of the Japan Association of Arbitrators and the European Business Council in Japan, and is the founding president of the Greek Chamber of Commerce in Japan. He teaches at Temple University’s Tokyo campus and Keio University Law School. He speaks English, Greek and Japanese.
“Tony Andriotis combines deep knowledge of arbitration procedure with a practical, commercially-minded approach that clients truly value.”
